Life Update

I got a text from my former co-anchor, Dave, the other day about how the last time I was gone from work for three months I was on maternity leave. Wow. Hard to believe it’s been three months since I left my TV news job. It seems like time has flown by (but, at the same time I can’t imagine waking up at 2:30am. How did I do that for so long??). Unlike maternity leave, there’s no going back this time. But I do miss you, Dave and my other co-workers!

Everyone I talk to asks the same question: “So what are you doing now?” My standard answer is: “A little of this, little of that.” But really, what does that mean? Well, in addition to being a more awake mom and getting to take my son to preschool in the morning (a little of this), and doing some blogging and creating content on Instagram, plus continuing my “Meatball Monday” demo videos (a little of that), and being busy as the Chair of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Ice Ball (a lot of that), I’m also pursuing a few different things including freelance on camera work, public speaking and media training.

A few weeks ago, I got to work with a major development company in town and be the on camera talent for a promotional video for a new office park in Austin. I got to be on the other side of the interviewing and answer questions about living in Austin. I had a blast being on camera again and I’ve been talking with several companies and brands about more work like that.

I’ve also booked a few public speaking gigs to host big events. I’ve emceed dozens of events over the years and done some moderating for panels and I really enjoy that. I’ve read that public speaking anxiety impacts about 73% of the population. People rank it higher than fear of heights, spiders or even death. Yeah. So, many organizations are happy to hand over the mic to someone else. And I love it. Win win.

I mentioned media training and that’s kept me busy as well. Ever since I started in the news business, I have made mental notes of tips and suggestions I could give people who want to be on camera to promote something, or for those who represent these people. Doing media training sessions for business owners and public relations execs has been something I’ve thought about for several years. So, once I left my job, it was pretty natural for me to sit down and develop a presentation for media training and consulting. This includes everything from learning how media works to developing the message and tips for being on camera.
